Practice

Alan Bond works and lives in Edinburgh. He builds large, architectural installations and smaller architectural models that invite audience participation and also makes smaller sculptures exploring environmental and historical themes. Constructed from found materials, he chooses remnants, colours and textures that evoke history and association The mixed materials work with each other, contributing to the aesthetic of the work. His works on paper fall between painting and drawing. They are based on architectural themes or objects seen in the landscape. In these observed spaces, he looks for unusual qualities or anomalies which allow for re-interpretation, re-ordered perspectives and the opportunity to suggest new ideas about them. Outcomes may be rational, ironic, funny,or absurdist. They pay homage to the architects and constructors that have influenced him.

Beyond the Studio

Seven Seven Contemporary Art

Before moving to Scotland, I was based in London. There I founded Seven Seven Contemporary Art. The gallery had strong international links working with public museums and private galleries in Europe. We joined Trieste Contemporanea, creators of Continental Breakfast, a consortium of art organisations and museums in Central Eastern Europe and the Baltic states. This resulted in exchanges and exhibiting opportunities in the National gallery of Slovenia, and participation at the Venice Forum for Contemporary Art Curators at the Venice Biennale in 2006.

The gallery collaborated with Supermarket,at the Kulturhuset, Stockholm and arranged several exchanges with AKA gallery in Rome. Seven Seven participated in Zoo Art Fair in 2005

Creative Training

I worked with major branding companies, consulting on major contracts and developing creative training workshops for Landor Associates, Enterprise IG, Futurebrand, and Smith & Weston. Set in inspiring European venues and separated from their computers, these team building events allowed the participants to focus on engagement with the location, use tactile materials and engage in Fine Art critical evaluation.

Set Design and Production From my studio in Bow Arts I formed a team of skilled artists to provide set design and production for major London venues. These included The Royal Albert Hall, Grosvenor House Events and Lewisham Theatre during the late 1990s. Following visits to Malawi I exhibited at the Africa Centre, London and supported by the British Council, was subsequently invited to provide workshops for township students in Zimbabwe. These screenprinting workshops resulted in European scholarships for some students and new career paths for others.

My Africa experiences led me to WOMAD. Here from 1992 -93 I designed, produced and installed site and stage decoration for festivals world wide.
