Fleurs du Mal

2017
acrylic painting over screenprinted on paper
150cm x 3cm x 80cm (w x d x h)

Exhibited Scottish Society of Artists Open 2017. These were a set of restored and revived pictures from a previously much bigger collection.

Winner of the Glasgow Arts Club Prize.

The pictures originated from the experience of my studio overlooking Columbia Road Flower Market . The market traders abandoned their unsold flowers in the gutters in,long flat boxes. This poignant scene suggested the images I went on to make.
My concerns were consciously technical and formal. I wanted to integrate print and painting, representing flowers as strong and robust forms. I was however aware of the symbolism of the images and it seemed apt to link them with Baudelaire poem cycle .
